December 24

The shepherds didn’t just go back to their fields after the angels returned to heaven. They didn’t question their humble status in the community or decide among themselves who would go so the others could watch the flocks. No! They knew that it was the Lord who sent the angels to deliver the good news to them. They immediately decided to act on what they had heard. They said, “Let’s go and let’s hurry” because they believed the message was urgent and true.  They knew of the caves on the outskirts of Bethlehem made of stacked rock walls used to house livestock, and they knew they would find the baby in the manger.

We are called to respond with similar urgency to the good news of salvation, not letting our busy lives or fears get in the way.  The shepherds showed us, too, the importance of mutual encouragement in our faith journey, and how faith can be strengthened when shared with others.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the example of the shepherds who responded to Your message with such faith and eagerness. When we hear Your call, may we also go with haste, and not let our schedules or distractions keep us from seeking Jesus. Help us to find Him in unexpected places. Amen
