Spirit Filled, Spirit Led, Spirit (Em)Powered

“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” — Acts 2:4 (NIV)”

Dear Church Family,

Pentecost is more than a moment in history—it’s the beginning of a movement. In Acts 2:4, the Spirit doesn’t simply rest on the disciples; it fills them. And the first thing they do? They speak. Not with polished sermons or rehearsed speeches, but with the words the Spirit gave them—words that connected, translated, and invited. It was the sound of heaven breaking into real life, and everyone heard it in their own language.

That same Spirit is alive in us today. At First Methodist Houston, we believe the Church is at its best when it is Spirit-filled and Spirit-led—when we listen for the voice of God, speak the good news with boldness, and serve with joy and compassion. Whether we’re gathered Downtown, serving in Port Houston, or caring for our city through Lifeline and Quillian, we are people enabled by the Spirit to live lives that witness to the love of Christ.

This Sunday we’re launching a new sermon series called Spirit-Led—the story of how ordinary people, filled with the Holy Spirit, witnessed boldly to the power of God at work in the world. Throughout the month of June, we’ll explore how the Spirit forms us, calls us, and sends us—just like those first believers—to bear witness in our neighborhoods and beyond.

This series isn’t just about what happened then; it’s about what God wants to do now—in us, among us, and through us.

So I invite you to lean in, to open your heart, and to pray:

Come, Holy Spirit.
Fill us.
Lead us.
Speak through us—
until our city, indeed the whole world,
hears the good news in a language they understand.

I can’t wait to see where the Spirit leads you next!
Peace and Joy,
Pastor Lance
