January 30 – Devotional
Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 3:1-21
Key Verses: I planted, Apollos watered, but God made it grow. . . We are God’s coworkers, and you are God’s field, God’s building. – 1 Corinthians 3:6 & 9, CEB
Maybe you’ve heard the expression We don’t have it all together, but together we have it all. That is what Paul was telling the Corinthians. Paul planted the church at Corinth. Apollos watered it. God made it grow. How amazing that since the beginning of time, God used ordinary men and women to bring His Kingdom to earth! And, still today, God partners with us, sinners saved by His grace, to grow churches and make disciples. Each of us is called and equipped by God to do His will. No sitting back and letting the pastors do all the work. No choosing sides. No boasting about our individual contributions. We are called to follow Christ in unity with one another as we work together to build God’s kingdom by making disciples of Jesus Christ. The good news is that we do not do it alone. In fact, we cannot do it alone. We can plant the seed, we can water the seed, but we cannot make it grow. That is God’s job, and He is at work 24 hours a day every day of the year. Our God is in the seed-growing business! What a blessing to know He invites us to join in planting and watering the seeds!

• How does our church plant and water the seeds God entrusts to our care? How can you contribute to the vision of God’s Kingdom on earth?
• If you were to take a long nap and wake up in five years, what would First Houston United Methodist Church look like if it were fulfilling God’s purpose?
Listen: With open eyes, ears, and heart, listen for God to speak to you now and throughout the day.
