January 15 – Devotional

Scripture Reading: Numbers 13:1 – 14:25

Key Verses: Now Caleb calmed the people before Moses and said, “We must go up and take possession of it [the Promised Land], because we are more than able to do it.” But the men who went up with him said, “We can’t go up against the people because they are stronger than we.” – Numbers 13:30-31, CEB

As the Israelites approached Canaan, Moses sent Joshua, Caleb, and ten other men ahead to spy on the land God promised them. The spies returned and reported the land was flowing with milk and honey, but it was inhabited by strong men living in fortified cities. Caleb and Joshua were ready to take possession of the land, but the

ten other men convinced the Israelites it was too dangerous to enter it. Moses and Joshua pleaded with the people to trust God and claim the land God had promised them, but the people rebelled and threatened to stone Moses and Joshua. As a result of their disobedience, God punished the Israelites, and they spent the next 40 years wandering in the desert. Fear is powerful, but the God we serve is more powerful. How will we trust Him with the future of our church when we see the many obstacles in the way?

Pray: 

• When has First Houston United Methodist Church hid or ran away in the face of danger or challenges and refused to follow God’s leading?
• When has our church faced fears and acted boldly to step out in faith and follow God’s leading?
• What holds First Houston United Methodist Church back from boldly stepping out in faith?
