MESSAGE FROM PASTOR LANCE
May 25, 2025
Stay up to date with all that’s happening at First Methodist Houston.
Dear Church Family,
In the final chapter of Scripture, John gives us a breathtaking vision of a river of life flowing from the throne of God, flanked by the tree of life. Its leaves, we’re told, are “for the healing of the nations.” This promise comes at the very end of the Bible’s great arc—from creation, through brokenness, and into restoration.
It’s more than a poetic image. It’s a calling.
God’s church—this church—is invited to be a foretaste of that healing – a beacon of justice, reconciliation, and light – a community where grace flows freely, and all who are weary or wounded can find rest. This Sunday, we get a glimpse of that promise in action. One person will be baptized into Christ’s body. Another will come to reaffirm his baptismal covenant and renew his journey of faith.
Moments like these remind us why the church matters.
We are not just a gathering of people who believe the same things. We are a people shaped by the Lamb at the center—called to reflect God’s heart for a hurting world. And in a world full of division, violence, and fear, the church is meant to be a witness to something different: healing and restoration.
As I prepare to step away from my role as your Senior Pastor at the end of June, my heart is full of gratitude and hope. This church is rooted deeply in mission—in your partnerships across Houston, in your ministries of compassion and justice, and in your desire to grow disciples who love boldly. The Spirit is moving here. The river of life is flowing. I truly believe: the best days of this church are not behind us—they are ahead!
So let this Sunday be a celebration of all God has done—and a recommitment to what God is still doing. Let the waters of baptism renew our vision. Let the Lord’s Table give us a hunger for justice. And let the leaves of that tree remind us: we are here to be healers.
We are here to shine with resurrection light. May it be so!
