MESSAGE FROM PASTOR LANCE
July 16, 2025
Stay up to date with all that’s happening at First Methodist Houston.
Hello Church Family!
OIn my personal devotional time right now, I’m reading through the story of Moses. I got to the plague of the frogs invading Egypt, and Pharoah tells Moses that if he’ll get rid of the frogs, he’ll let the people go. Moses says, “Have it your way. When should I pray for you and your officials and your people to remove the frogs…?” Pharoah said, “Tomorrow.” (Exodus 8:9-10). That’s hilarious to me. Why on earth would Pharoah wait until tomorrow? Why wouldn’t he say “Right now, please”? It reminded me that we don’t always ask the Lord for the right things, or the right timing. Fortunately for us, we have the New Testament, not just the Old. And Paul teaches us that when we don’t know what to pray for, the Holy Spirit prays on our behalf (Romans 8:26-27). I encourage you to take a moment and invite the Holy Spirit to do that right now.
Below, you’ll see a couple of announcements I’m excited about. For folks who aren’t able to make it to worship and aren’t comfortable using livestream, every week we’re mailing out copies of the sermon to help people continue to feel connected to the church and part of worship. We’ve started with a good list, but if you’d like to add yourself or a family member to the list, you can sign up below.
You’ll also see a sign up for cottage meetings. During these meetings I’m going to ask some critical questions, gather all the feedback, and use it to plan out the next year or so. I’m asking every church member to attend one of these meetings. It’ll last 90 minutes-2 hours, and it’ll be an opportunity for not only fellowship, but also for your voice to help shape the future. I hope you’ll make time to attend one of these meetings.
And please Save the Date for September 28th. We will be having a State of the Church meeting that day, where I’ll share the Cottage Meeting feedback, share my reflections after my first 90 days, and some next steps we’ll be taking together.
