Pastor of Evangelism and Discipleship
Born in Argentina, Emil was raised in Alief and is a life-long Houstonian. Having five siblings, he remembers that no day was an ordinary day at the Niz household and cherishes every moment of it for it shaped him. He encountered Christ at the age of 17 through a series of events that started with his mother introducing him to the Church and, ultimately, Jesus. This encounter led him to serve in a small missional church plant that ministered to the Latino diaspora community of Houston. He has gained a diverse set of theological training and experience in intercultural and missions study throughout his time in ministry.
Emil received his Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from the University of Houston-Downtown, which opened career paths at both Univision and Apple Inc. Due to an experience and response to a need, he then began a career in Education, teaching at underserved communities. He taught for five years at a dual-language charter school called Amigos Por Vida-Friends for Life, a PK-8 grade campus in the Gulfton community of Houston.Eventually, he received a Master’s degree in Education with emphasis in language acquisition theory, curriculum, and instruction from the University of Houston-Downtown and began teaching for Yes Prep Schools, a charter system that emphasizes higher learning for underserved communities to provide them with choice-filled lives. Emil’s heart and mind gauges towards all things restorative.
Currently, he is back in graduate school pursuing his Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary, concentrating his degree in intercultural and missiology studies in hopes of continuing in post-graduate level education. Emil ministers to small groups and helps organize adult discipleship at First Methodist Houston. He is married Paula Niz, who is also on staff, and they both raise a rambunctious and loving little man named Maximiliano (Maxi) and a little lady, who is full life, named Viviana (Vivi).
