What Is Holy Week?

Holy Week is the week leading up to Easter, when we are reminded of God’s sacrifice of His son Jesus and His love for all people. Throughout the week we will have several worship services, starting on Palm Sunday (where we celebrate his triumphant entrance to Jerusalem), to Maundy Thursday (where we commemorate the Last Supper), Good Friday (where we honor Christ’s death), and Easter Sunday (where we celebrate his resurrection).

Join First Methodist Houston throughout this Holy Week, either online or in-person, at either one of our campuses. We look forward to celebrating with you and your family this Easter season.

Holy Week Schedule

Palm Sunday, March 24, 2024

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. We celebrate Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem, while remembering that it was a journey Jesus knew would end in his sacrificial death on the cross.

9:00 A.M. West Traditional Worship Service*
Come take a palm and celebrate the triumphant entry of our Lord in the chapel at our West Campus.

11:00 A.M. Downtown Traditional Worship Service*
Children (and their parents!) will be holding a palm processional during worship at our Downtown campus, with a Children’s Moment following directly afterwards. To join in, be at the chapel (next door to the sanctuary) at 10:45 a.m. before the service begins.

11:00 A.M. The Source – Contemporary Worship Service*
The Source hosts a contemporary service in room 320 of the 3663 Building across the street from the main campus. Come celebrate Palm Sunday with us!

11:00 A.M. Altar-Umoja – African Flavor Worship Service*
Grab a palm and join in the worship in the chapel with Altar-Umoja.

*all services will be live-streamed. Live streaming information is at the top of the page.

Maundy Thursday, March 28, 2024

Maundy Thursday is a day for remembering the events of Jesus’ last supper. The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum, which means “command.” It references some of the last instructions Jesus gave his disciples, at that meal, his last command before his death: that we love one another, just as Jesus has loved us.

12:00 P.M. Traditional Worship Service*
Join us at noon in the downtown sanctuary for a service of communion and remembrance as we prepare our hearts for Easter. The service is designed to be short enough that downtown visitors can make the service part of their lunch hour.

7:00 P.M. Experiential Worship Service

Thursday night brings back one of our favorite elements from last year’s Holy Week – a deeply interactive and participatory service that travels through the West Campus Atrium. If you attended last year, you saw the Atrium transformed into a pathway of physical worship elements that led attendees on a journey of prayer, contemplation, and worship. Each person travels from station to station, taking time to remember their baptism, taking communion, receiving an anointing, planting seeds, writing prayers, meditating, praying with leaders, and much more. Suitable for worshippers of all ages.

Good Friday, March 29, 2024

Good Friday is a solemn day, focused on looking back at the crucifixion of death of Jesus Christ at Calvary. Together, we remember how Jesus went willingly to the cross, and how he suffered and died as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins.

12:00 P.M. Traditional Worship Downtown*
Join us at the Downtown campus with the choir, soloists, pastors, and leaders from all our worship services as we walk through the songs and texts that bring us together to the foot of the cross.

7:00 P.M. Service of Darkness*
As the sun sets through the windows of the chapel on the West campus, members of all of our worship services join together in one sacred ceremony to honor the sacrifice of Christ on this holy day. Sometimes called a Tenebrae Service (meaning “service of the shadows”), we walk through the story of the crucifixion in gathering darkness, extinguishing candles as we approach the moment of Jesus’ death.

*service will be live streamed. Live streaming information is at the top of the page.

Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024

Easter Sunday is the day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who returned from the grave after three days to bring us salvation. By his blood we are saved, and we can now take confidence because we have the same power working in us that raised Jesus from the dead!

All of our services on Easter Sunday are a joyous celebration of the mighty power of God to break us free from the chains of sin and offer us everlasting life.

9:00 A.M. Traditional Worship Service – West*
Our first service is a triumphant Easter celebration in the West Campus chapel to welcome the resurrection of Christ.

10:00 A.M. Family Easter Breakfast and Celebration
On both our West and Downtown campuses, families are invited to join us for an Easter breakfast and celebration for the children. Downtown we will be in the Fellowship Hall, and on the West Campus we’ll be inside the 3663 building. Click here to register to let us know you’re coming so that we have breakfast for everyone!

11:00 A.M. Traditional Worship Service – Downtown*
Join us for an Easter celebration in our downtown sanctuary as we honor the risen King. Come early and find a good seat! Free parking is available in the lot across Clay Street from our church campus.

11:00 Altar-Umoja – African Flavor Worship Service*
Altar-Umoja will lead a joyous service of praise and thanksgiving, as they celebrate Easter in the West Campus chapel. Afterwards, join us for a communal meal in the 3663 building as we eat together as one family.

11:11 A.M. The Source – Contemporary Worship Service*
The Source hosts a celebratory service in the 3663 building, across the street from the main campus, bringing energetic modern worship, down-to-earth teaching, and a chance for community and friendship.

*service will be live streamed. Live streaming information is at the top of the page.
