STEPHEN MINISTRY

Our congregation’s Stephen Ministry equips lay people to provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care to individuals in our congregation and community who are experiencing difficulties in their lives.

A Stephen Minister is:
  • A child of God who walks beside a person who is hurting
  • A congregation member with gifts for caregiving who is
carefully selected to serve in this role
  • Someone who has received 50 hours of training in providing emotional and spiritual care
  • A caring, Christian friend who listens, cares, prays, supports, and encourages
  • Someone who will “be there” for his or her care receiver, meeting faithfully for about an hour each week, for as long as there is a need
Stephen Ministers provide the emotional and spiritual care we need when faced with a crisis or difficulty such as:
  • Loss of a loved one
  • Hospitalization, chronic or terminal illness
  • Divorce or separation
  • Loneliness or discouragement
  • Spiritual crisis
  • Unemployment or a job crisis
  • Incarceration
  • Aging
  • Birth, adoption, miscarriage, or infertility
  • Recovery after an accident or disaster
If you, or someone you know, could benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister, or if you are interested in becoming a Stephen Minister, call the Stephen Ministry helpline number: 713-458-4709, and someone will contact you.

SUPPORT GROUP

GRIEFSHARE
The loss of a loved one is devastating no matter how strong our faith may be. It is in these times that we need the support of our church family. First Methodist Houston encourages those who experience a loss to contact the church so we may support you in the healing process. We offer grief support groups on a seasonal basis, grief booklets that offer insight into the grieving process. For our Stephen Ministry (see related link on this webpage).

For immediate needs regarding pastoral support, contact the Pastor on Call at: 832-668-1892.
