WESLEY ACADEMY

Wesley Academy is First Methodist Houston's exemplary, Christian, private school that is located on the Westchase Campus at 10570 Westpark Dr. @ Sam Houston Tollway.

In August of 1995, culminating a vision of First Methodist Houston, Wesley Academy opened its doors to welcome students from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds. Today, Wesley Academy, conveniently located in the Westchase District, is housed on a twenty-seven acre tract of First Methodist Houston's Westchase Campus. The two-story Education Building contains science labs, computer labs, large classrooms, as well as music and art facilities accommodating children three-years-old through Grade 8.

The mission of Wesley Academy is to provide an educational environment that embodies the Christian faith and encourages students to reach their academic potential. By fostering mutual respect and cooperation, the school enables each child to develop a sense of self-worth, independence, responsibility and self-direction.

Students are introduced to the wondrous diversity of creative expression found in reading and writing. Through literature, poetry, creative writing, story telling, and dramatic expression a strong academic foundation is built which supports sound fundamentals in all aspects of the curriculum. Music, art, computer (classroom and lab), Spanish, Christian education, health, library, and physical education round out the curriculum.

Wesley Academy is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the Texas Association of Non-Public Schools.

LETTER FROM NEW HEADMASTER

July 9, 2010

Dear Wesley Academy Community:

I am so excited to have finally arrived in Houston and have enjoyed my first few days at Wesley Academy. There is a tremendous amount of activity at the school this summer and I have already had the opportunity to meet a number of parents and teachers. Everyone seems very excited about our future and I eagerly anticipate the beginning of school which is only a short five weeks away.

I have been a headmaster in Episcopal schools for the past ten years and have always enjoyed the blend of academic and spiritual growth found in religious schools. Pastor Paul Clines and the clergy at First Methodist have been most welcoming and their commitment to Wesley is unshakeable. With their help and the support of our parents and our Board of Trustees, I am optimistic that this next year will be one of the most exciting years in the sixteen year history of Wesley Academy. I believe that schools and school communities are one of the most joyful places in which one could work.

In the way of a brief introduction that will have to suffice until we have the opportunity to meet, I am a native Tar Heel, most recently living in Charleston, South Carolina. I have a 17 year old daughter and a 14 year old son that will both be in high school next year in Charleston and my wife will remain with them for the year. Thanks to excellent air connections between the two cities, we will be able to easily visit on weekends. Having lived in Louisiana for seven years and with family here in Houston, I am familiar with much of what Houston has to offer. As an avid golfer, hunter, and sports fan, I look forward to getting to know Texas more closely.

When considering my experience in other schools, it is important that we realize that all schools and school communities are different. What works in one school might not be the best course of action in another. I will work quickly to get to know as much about Wesley as I possibly can and it is my immediate goal to assist the Board of Trustees in developing a plan to address issues specifically affecting Wesley Academy as well as those affecting independent schools in general. One of my duties will be to meet with parent groups throughout the planning process so that we are responsive to the needs of our community. We are blessed with a number of positive attributes at Wesley and thus we have a number of good starting points from which to begin “Wesley 2.0”.

You will find me to be an optimistic school leader, easy to approach, and deeply committed to our children. I truly have an open door policy and should you have the chance, I hope you will stop by the school this summer to introduce yourself and your children. I need to hear from you as communication over the next year is absolutely crucial to our ability to grow Wesley Academy.

Thank you again for placing your trust in me and I look forward to a great school year.

Sincerely,

Christian J. Proctor, Ph.D.
Interim Headmaster
