ADULT CHOIR - DOWNTOWN

The ADULT CHOIR plays an integral part in the worship experience at the Downtown Campus. They lead the congregation in two traditional morning worship services each week. The choir sings a variety of sacred music incorporating classics, traditional anthems, hymn arrangements and spirituals. They also present several concerts annually, including seasonal services during Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter, accompanied by full orchestra, brass ensembles, string ensembles and hand bells. Special music events are planned throughout the year and have included fully stages operas, oratorios, Broadway Dinner Theaters, and Opera Dinner Theaters. The choir plans special music tours every three years. Past tours have included trips to New York City, Washington D.C., Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Open to all adult singers, the choir family is a close fellowship for those who love to sing.

It is not necessary to have a trained voice to be a member of our Sanctuary Choir. The requirements are a voice that blends with others, some choral experience, the ability to read music, and a respect for the responsibilities of membership. Rehearsals are held in the Choir Room (downstairs from the Sanctuary) on Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm. Child care is available. New singers are always welcome!

What is truly exciting about our Music and Fine Arts Ministry at our Westchase Campus is its rich diversity and its attention to the needs of those families residing in West Houston. We are blessed to sit on 30 acres of land, filled with sprawling green fields; a first class Sports & Recreation facility - the Quillian Center; a school - Wesley Academy; and two beautiful worship spaces: a 2,500 seat Worship Center and concert space, and an intimate, 250 seat, Hinson Chapel. These rooms allow singers, dancers, actors, and instrumentalists of all ages a wonderful opportunity to share their love for Jesus Christ, through their Fine Art.

Since 2000, we have hosted a number of exciting concerts, featuring some of the greatest artists living: the Oakridge Boys, and Ray Price; singers Larnelle Harris, Sandi Patty, CeCe Winans, and Jonathan Pierce; dance ensembles Ballet Magnificat, from Atlanta, and Ballet Grace, from Houston; pianists, Dino, and Joe Sample; Jazz flautist, Hubert Laws; and, the Philadelphia Organ Quartet; West Houston Civic Symphony; Prairie View A&M chorus, directed by Jan Taylor; the Texas Masterworks Chorus, directed by Tom Jaber; the Houston Symphonic Band, directed by Fred Angerstein; the Houston Children's Chorus, directed by Steve Roddy; and, a host of High School and Middle School choirs and instrumental ensembles.

We have also held yearly Art Shows, Coffee Houses, and concerts featuring regional and local artisans, artists, and musicians gifting us with the sights and sounds of our African-American Heritage, our Latin Heritage, and our Oriental Heritage.

Our musicians and actors have also performed full productions of: The Music Man, Godspell, Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Seussical the Musical, How To Eat Like a Child and Never Grow up, The Word on the Street, an original musical, and a host of other wonderful productions.

Annually we host a Hymn Sing with Dr. Gerald Ray, featuring renowned pianists, such as Barbara Bamberg, Marvin Gaspard, Johann Acuña, Steve Roddy, Linda McKechnie, recording artists Cynthia Clawson, Scot Cameron and award winning saxophonist Nathan Woodward.

Our Choir sings at the service each Sunday and for special services during Lent, Easter, Christmas and July 4th. The choir meets each Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30pm in the Choir room to rehearse. We also have an excelling Handbell Choir that meets each Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:00pm in the Choir Room, and the Hand Bell Choir plays throughout the year at Sunday services and other seasonal services. If you love to sing or play hand bells come join us this Wednesday.

On Sunday we have one service that offers both traditional and contemporary music. Join us at 10:30am to enjoy the diverse musical talent that helps make this service very inspirational.

ADULT BELLS - DOWNTOWN

The Sanctuary Ringers are a very active hand bell group that plays special music for several services throughout the year. The group also presents holiday music and a performs collaborative concerts with ringers from the Rejoice Ringers. The Sanctuary Ringers ring anywhere from 3 to 5 octaves and have a 6th octave for special pieces. The 6 octave set of English hand bells and 5 octaves of chimes represent one of the larger collections of bells in the area.

Directed by Dr. Terry Morris, this instrumental group includes many trained musicians but there is always the opportunity to learn to play. All you need is a heart centered on worship, a desire to work and learn, and the ability to attend rehearsals and play at both morning services when called upon. The ability to read rhythm and perform the physical acts of ringing and malloting are desirable as well. Substitute ringers are regularly utilized in rehearsals and services. Rehearsals are from 6 to 6:50pm every Wednesday between Labor Day and Christmas Eve in the fall and winter; and we return after New Year's Day and ring until the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend.

Please contact Dr. Morris at: tmorris@fmhouston.com or 832-668-1824 for more information.
